A WALK staged to support the battle against motor neurone disease and to remember a rugby club founder has been hailed as a huge success.

Silsden Storm amateur rugby league club and local man Danny Horne spearheaded the 20-mile trek, in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

More than 40 people took part in the socially-distanced event – and over £10,000 was raised.

The walk, held just before the start of the latest national lockdown, had previously been postponed twice due to Covid-19 restrictions.

It was a case of third time lucky for the organisers as the trek, along the canal towpath from Silsden to Leeds Rhinos' Headingley stadium, got under way. The walkers were waved-off by the Bradford Bulls mascot, Bullman.

Conditions under foot were difficult, but everyone completed the route.

"The first 11 miles were on solid ice!" said a spokesman.

"The walk was signposted with mile markers – and there were a few special names on the boards to give everyone an extra push to complete it."

Mr Horne had planned the event in memory of Silsden Storm founder and Keighley Cougars legend Phil Stephenson, who lost his fight against motor neurone disease in 2019 – and in support of Leeds Rhinos hero Rob Burrow, who is currently battling the condition.

Backing for the walk came from across the rugby league community and the business sector.

Mr Horne appeared on the 7 in 7 daily vlog of Kevin Sinfield, who completed seven marathons in seven days to show support for his friend and former teammate Rob, where he spoke to both men and promoted the walk.

Cougars, Bradford Bulls and the Rhinos all gave their backing via social media.

And sponsorship was provided by businesses including Timothy Taylor brewery, Yorkshire Tea, Cadbury's and Eve Products, which provided the mile markers.

Close family members of Phil Stephenson were at the finish to congratulate walkers as they completed the gruelling route.

The spokesman added: "It was a long, hard walk but it was all worth it when the total was announced – over £10,000 and rising.

"Silsden Storm is supporting the Motor Neurone Disease Association throughout 2021 and the club is hopeful it can return to playing this year after missing the 2020 season due to Covid-19."
