I APPLAUD the police for returning the police station to the centre of town – and I am delighted the agreement has not yet been signed as it could be built in a better place.
The council needs to move the new green area so that it stretches from North Street to Henry Street, which will encompass the site where the college was situated. This will give a good frontage to Cavendish Street and reveal the pleasant facade of the buildings of Henry Street whilst at the same time giving less prominence to the buildings of Alice Street. This would then form a much-improved town centre park or area and better shape than the current open site.
The police station, I suggest, should be situated at the Alice Street end of the current green space. Here it could have a grand frontage onto the new green park and from the rear would have better road access to the north, south, east and west.
Please change the plans before it is too late.
