AS I wrote this, the traffic lights opposite Aldi in Silsden had once again caused congestion, pollution and frustration.

Leaving at 1.05pm from Silsden to be at Airedale Hospital for 1.30pm was apparently much too optimistic.

Traffic was queued from the tannery corner to the lights, with traffic backed-up every side street.

On my return, walking, I observed traffic backed-up Station Road in Steeton, and standing traffic on the roundabout/bypass. Once again traffic was queued from the tannery corner, causing traffic to back-up Skipton Road and every other feeder to the main road.

The one thing I never saw were the promised spotters – all I could see was a man in a van by the lights, head in hand reading his phone. Whichever misguided bureaucrat gave the builders carte blanche to play fast and loose with people's time and lives was very mistaken. I can only hope that the permission granted carried a very punitive clause if they overrun the predicted five weeks.

Incandescently yours.

Paul Buckley, Silsden
