TALKS have been held over safety issues on a stretch of road where a young boy died.

Councillors, highways officers and police from West and North Yorkshire met to discuss concerns about Sutton Lane, at Eastburn.

Last month, nine-year-old George Lewis died when he was struck by a vehicle in the lane – which straddles the county boundaries.

The meeting – at the council chamber in Skipton – was organised and co-chaired by councillors Stephen Morrell and Rebecca Whitaker, who represents Craven ward on Bradford Council.

The meeting opened with a minute’s silence in memory of George.

Those present heard there were “historic difficulties” in making progress on road safety improvements in Sutton Lane.

But Cllr Morrell, who is chair of Sutton Parish Council as well as a Craven district councillor, said: “Regardless of those issues, all those in attendance committed to working in partnership to make a difference and to look at a number of proposals for improving road safety. We looked at both long-term goals and also a number of short-term proposals. The group will meet again in about four weeks to report on progress.”
