TRIBUTE has been paid to Keighley people for how they’ve rallied round to support Afghan refugees.

The town’s Salvation Army captain, Dafne de Castro e Lemos, said she’d been “bowled over” by the generosity of people across Keighley and surrounding areas.

She chairs Place of Sanctuary, a group which welcomes and helps take care of refugees and asylum seekers arriving in this area.

Its committee has taken two vanloads of goods to Horton Housing, which is leading the Afghan relief response for the district.

Among those to donate was Glusburn Primary School, whose pupils each gave an item to support the cause.

Dafne said: “We have been bowled over by the generosity of the people of Keighley and surrounding areas to support refugees, who are currently living in a hotel and awaiting news from the Home Office about when and where they will be housed.

“To anyone who hasn’t had the chance to help yet but wants to, we still need prams and car seats, size three or higher nappies, colouring books, crayons, pens, paper, pencils and educational toys. But please be aware we don’t need more clothes.”

Items can be taken to The Good Shepherd Centre, West Lane, Keighley – behind Our Lady of Victories School – Mondays and Wednesdays, between 9am and noon, or Wednesdays 5pm to 8pm. To donate financially, visit localgiving.org/charity/hortonhousing.
