A KEIGHLEY charity is offering advice to help people support those with dementia this winter.

Dementia Friendly Keighley says the winter months can be especially tough for people living with the condition.

A spokesperson said: "The colder weather and darker nights can take their toll on all of us. But it’s particularly difficult for those living with dementia, who can find it hard to understand why they’re spending more time indoors.

"In fact, recent studies have found evidence that the changing seasons can lead to older people as a whole experiencing reduced cognitive function."

The charity says that at this time of year, people with dementia can be affected by the fading light and suffer from 'Sundowner Syndrome' – which may lead to increased anxiety, mood changes and depression.

"You can help by making sure your loved one is exposed to as much natural light as possible," said the spokesperson.

"A short walk, time spent in the garden or even a sit by the window can help."

Regular exercise is also recommended.

"If you have ever attended one of our awareness sessions you’ll have heard us talk about how important it is for those living with dementia to maintain a healthy lifestyle," said the spokesperson. "That includes doing some form of gentle exercise. Keeping active is especially important in the winter."

Dementia Friendly Keighley runs free 'music and movement' and tai chi sessions at Central Hall.

The music and movement group meets on Mondays, between 11.15am and noon. Activities are designed to improve strength and co-ordination and exercise the brain.

Tai chi takes place on Tuesdays, 1.30pm-2.15pm. Discover Tai Chi leads participants through a series of slow, continuous movements that build strength, improve balance and promote deep relaxation.

The spokesperson added: "Another vital part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, be it for a person living with dementia or anyone else, is a balanced diet. Eating plenty of fresh fruit and veg can keep energy levels up. And it’s just as important to make sure you’re eating regularly.

"Similarly, drinking plenty of water at regular intervals will prevent you or your loved one from becoming dehydrated."

Anyone requiring support can contact the Dementia Friendly Keighley helpline on 01535 602529. It is open seven days a week, between 10am and 2pm. Alternatively, text or WhatsApp the charity on 07452 773788.
