KEIGHLEY MP Robbie Moore is backing a parliamentary bill which will ensure people with Down's syndrome get lifelong care.

The bill has been approved at its initial stage, known as the second reading, and is a step closer to becoming law in this country.

MP Dr Liam Fox, who brought the Private Members' Bill, said it would "lighten the burden" for parents worried about the future.

It will now be considered by a committee of MPs and, if approved by both the Commons and Lords, could become law by next spring.

The legislation would improve provision across a number of areas for people with Down's – or Down – syndrome, including social and maternity care, education, health and employment.

The National Down Syndrome Policy Group has launched a support campaign, Stand Up for Down Syndrome, and a petition has attracted more than 30,000 signatures.

Mr Moore said: "I'm delighted to be supporting the Down Syndrome Bill to make life better for people with Down syndrome across Keighley, Ilkley and the whole country. We can and must do more to provide better opportunities for those with Down syndrome so they can access the very best education, health and social care services."
