FIRE chiefs are urging householders to ensure they get their chimneys swept and inspected regularly.

The plea follows an incident at Wilsden early this morning, when a fire in a chimney spread to the roof space of the house.

Firefighters were called out to the detached property, in Main Street, at 2am.

Crews from Keighley, Bingley and Fairweather Green – plus an aerial appliance from Bradford – attended.

Breathing apparatus was worn, and roof ladders and a hose reel used, to tackle the fire.

Firefighters were at the scene for about three hours.

The occupants raised the alarm after being woken by smoke alarms.

"It was the first time for a while that the occupants had used the open fire and a bird's nest in the chimney caught fire," said Ahsan Ali, watch commander at Keighley fire station.

"We urge people to get their chimneys inspected and swept at least once a year."
