LAST Friday (January 21), peace campaigners highlighted the treaty which came into force a year ago with a display of small flags representing each of the 59 nations which have ratified the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

This was an event which attracted a lot of interest and support from local workers and shoppers.

Many passers-by were pleased to sign the community pledge in support of our Government backing the treaty.

A supporter commented: "In my view if we are to combat climate change we cannot afford to utilise resources on the production of nuclear weapons. It is a huge waste of goods and materials that should be better deployed to mitigate problems at home and abroad, not to mention the catastrophe of nuclear weapons use by intent or accident".

Peace campaigners will call for our Government to engage with the United Nations and to attend the international campaign in preparation for the first meeting of the parties (COP1) of the United Nations treaty to be held on from March 22-24 in Vienna (Covid permitting).

The photo, taken in Cliffe Castle Park, illustrates the banners used at the vigil.
