INCIDENTS reported to the RSPCA involving domestic rabbits – such as abandonment or neglect – have risen across the region.

The charity says that last year, it dealt with 153 incidents in West Yorkshire – up from 113 in 2020, a 35 per cent rise.

This region's total was the third worst in England, behind only London and Greater Manchester.

Nationally, the number rose from 4,508 in 2020 to 4,741 last year.

RSPCA rabbit welfare expert, Dr Jane Tyson, said: "Rabbits are one of the most neglected pets in Britain.

"We need to end the misconception that they are ideal ‘starter’ pets and are somehow ‘easier’ than cats and dogs.

"They need so much more than just a hutch at the end of the garden – they are very complex animals with needs for company, stimulation and exercise.

"When rabbits are bought on impulse an owner may not realise how complex they are to care for.

"For anyone who is certain that they can provide the time, space, money and care it takes to look after a pair of rabbits, then please consider adopting two of the many rescue rabbits in need of a home."
