KEIGHLEY district is preparing to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in style.

A host of events is planned to mark Her Majesty's 70 years on the throne.

On Thursday, June 2, a beacon will be lit in Keighley's Town Hall Square.

The beacon is one of thousands being illuminated across the UK and the Commonwealth as part of the official programme announced by Buckingham Palace for the Jubilee Weekend.

The Keighley event – organised by the town council – will begin at 9pm, with music from City of Bradford Pipe Band.

A bugler will also play, ahead of the beacon being lit at 9.45pm.

Anyone is welcome to attend.

Keighley Parish is staging a tea dance and cream tea event on Church Green, between 2pm and 4pm on June 2.

Funding is being provided by Bradford Council.

The Rev Natasha Thomas said: "If you want to join in the dancing and enjoy an afternoon tea with home-made scones, jam and cream, then please do come along."

A three-day celebration is being staged at Riddlesden, hosted by the Applegarth – Riddlesden and Morton United Services Club – in Banks Lane.

Activities will begin with an open day gin festival on Friday, June 3, from 3pm.

On the Saturday, June 4, a party night will feature live music and entertainment from Lauren Brook, starting at 7.30pm.

And a family fun day takes place from noon on Sunday, June 5. Attractions will include music performances by students of local singing coach Emi Hall; family games such as bingo, a royal quiz and tombola; a barbecue and a Great Riddlesden Bake Off competition. The Bake Off is open to all ages. It costs £5 to enter homemade cakes and entries should be taken to the club between 11.30am-noon on the day for judging.

At Steeton, events are being held in St Stephen's Church and hall.

On the Saturday, June 4 – between 1pm and 4pm – there will be community festival displays, children's activities and games, stalls, refreshments and a competition for the best dressed teddy in red, white and blue. People are invited to take along a picnic.

And the following day, June 5, from 2pm to 3.30pm, the displays will continue. And between 2pm and 2.30pm, the organist will play 'Music for an Occasion'. Tea and coffee will be served.

Oxenhope Cricket Club is holding an event on Sunday, June 5, at its Uppertown ground. The opening will be at 1pm by the West Yorkshire Deputy Lieutenant, David Pearson. Attractions will include a DJ, school races, performances from the Oxnop Singers and Bay Horse Ukes, an auction and raffle. Activities will continue until 8pm.

Libraries are also staging a host of free activities.

The line-up includes: Wednesday, June 1 – story performance experience with Jenna Drury and The Queen’s Hat by Steve Anthony, Silsden Library, 10.30am-11.30am; teddy bears picnic, Silsden Library, 11.30am-1pm.

Saturday, June 4 – Scratch Art Crafts, Silsden Library, 10am-noon; rhymes and tea party, Keighley Library, 11am.

And Keighley Library will have a display of royal-related items including news cuttings, photos and memorabilia.

At Cliffe Castle Museum, there will be a chance to learn more about the Queen's coronation and her visits to the Bradford district. A wide range of coronation souvenirs, from tins and tea towels to mugs and pencils, will be on show. The display will open on June 2 and run until early September.
