THE search is on for people in Keighley who have made a special contribution to improving their community.

Nominations are being sought for this year's Keighley Community Awards, which will be presented across nine categories.

All those shortlisted in the scheme – organised by Keighley Town Council – will be invited to an awards evening at the civic centre, in North Street, on Saturday, September 17.

Two of the categories are named in memory of former town councillors. The Gary Pedley Community Award will recognise someone who is making a significant contribution to their community through their time, actions, talents and dedication. And the Barry Thorne Sporting Hero Award pays tribute to somebody for their contribution to local sport over several years.

Other categories are Neighbour of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Inspiring Young Person of the Year, Emergency Services Hero of the Year, Climate Change Champion of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award.

Town mayor, Cllr Luke Maunsell, said: "We'd like to say 'thank you' to the people of Keighley who go that extra mile for our community."

Nomination forms can be downloaded at keighley.gov.uk, or email townclerk@keighley.gov.uk.

The closing date is August 26.
