A KEIGHLEY good cause has received £1,000 after being shortlisted in this year's Sky Bet Ebor Festival Community Sweepstake.

Ma’ Kelly’s Kitchen, which provides food parcels and hot meals to those in need, was among 22 Yorkshire charitable organisations chosen from over 150 entries.

Each shortlisted cause was matched with a runner in the Sky Bet Ebor handicap at York racecourse.

First past the post earned the winning organisation £20,000, with second and third receiving £5,000 and £2,000 respectively. All the remaining causes were each awarded £1,000.

The Sporting Memories Foundation scooped the top prize after its horse – Trawlerman, ridden by Frankie Dettori – won in a photo finish. Leeds Society for Deaf & Blind People and Keep Your Pet took second and third spots.

James Brennan, head of marketing and sponsorship at York racecourse, said: "As races go, it couldn’t have been a more exciting end to our Sky Bet Ebor Festival Community Sweepstake – with Trawlerman taking victory by such a narrow margin! It was an honour to host representatives from all 22 charities and I can’t wait to see them continue all their incredible work with the donations they've received off the back of the initiative."
