SOUTH Craven MP Julian Smith has welcomed an initiative to increase public access to electric vehicle chargepoints in North Yorkshire.

Through the so-called Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) pilot scheme, North Yorkshire County Council will work in partnership with industry to create new charging infrastructure for residents – from on-street chargepoints to larger petrol-station-style charging hubs.

The council will be awarded £2.2m in the first tranche of the project, which is backed by Government and industry funding.

Mr Smith said: "It is great that North Yorkshire County Council has been chosen to receive funding.

"This will deliver 70 public electric vehicle chargepoints and related infrastructure. The charging network is key to making the transition to electric vehicles.

"The roll-out of this scheme supports the Government’s drive to encourage more motorists to go electric, saving drivers money on fuel and running costs and improving air quality as the country moves towards net zero.

"The initiative will help residents without private driveways to have better access to electric vehicle chargers as well as growing the charging network, supporting the nation’s uptake of zero-emission vehicles and enabling more people to drive and charge without fear of being caught out no matter where they are."
