KEIGHLEY-district householders are being warned by the region's gas distributor against cutting corners in a bid to cut costs.
Northern Gas Networks fears that with energy prices and other costs soaring, people may be tempted to opt for DIY repairs on appliances and skip annual services.
The company is backing a campaign promoting the importance of gas safety.
Spokesperson Eileen Brown said: "We’re in unprecedented times when it comes to rising energy costs and we know that a lot of our customers are anxious about the financial implications for themselves and their families.
"In these challenging circumstances it can sometimes be tempting for people to try to take matters into their own hands – but our clear message to them is that gas must be treated with respect at all times.
"If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately."
Jonathan Samuel – of Gas Safe Register, the official body for legally-qualified engineers – said: "It’s important to stay aware of the warning signs of an unsafe gas appliance and contact a Gas Safe registered engineer if you’re worried something’s wrong, as well as having your annual gas safety check."
