CREATIVITY will take centre stage at Keighley Library when the historic building undergoes a transformation.

A free event takes place on Saturday, October 8 – between 10am and 4pm – as the culmination of a year-long programme, Create Connect Make.

The library, local artists and communities were involved in the project.

Led by artist Jean McEwan, activities ranging from calligraphy to textile art and poetry performance were developed.

The October 8 extravaganza will give the public an opportunity to take part in crafting activities, music and dancing, spoken word and workshops.

There will a chance to discover stories from the library archives, go on a guided walk spotlighting Keighley's heritage, try making art with books, and participate in an open mic slot. Food will be available.

The event, part of Keighley Arts and Film Festival, takes place during Libraries Week.

Jean says: "This Create Connect Make Fest is our opportunity to showcase the amazing creativity of people in Keighley, in a building that has been at the centre of our community for over a century.

"Throughout this programme we’ve had some incredible ideas from people taking part, and we want to turn that spark into a continuing beacon of creativity."

Dionne Hood is Bradford Libraries' development officer, and a practising artist.

She said: "This project is so important for us as a library service as we move forward with our plans for the future.

"Keighley Library is one of the pilots for our new service model which sees us tailoring each library to the needs of the communities served. We have been working closely with the communities of Keighley to find out what they really want to be happening, both creatively and culturally, in their library.

"We have invited people into the library who have never been before and this has given us the opportunity to let them know that it is a safe, welcoming space for everyone. The library belongs to the people of Keighley and we have really enjoyed working with some of these people to create and implement a whole host of activities and events.

"Everybody is invited to attend Create Connect Make Fest. There will be activities for people of all ages."

Supporters of the event include The Brick Box, The Leap, Arts Council England, Bradford Libraries, Bradford Council, Bradford 2025, Bradford For Everyone, Born in Bradford and Emerald Publishing.
