TRIBUTE has been paid to residents across the district who have welcomed Ukrainian refugees into their homes.

Households throughout the area are hosting people who have fled their war-torn homeland.

Bradford Council organised a 'thank you' event at the city's Ukrainian club.

Guests included council leader Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, chief executive Kersten England and the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Martin Love.

"We wanted to say 'thank you' and really show our appreciation to all those across the district who have opened their homes to people fleeing the horrific war in Ukraine," said Cllr Hinchcliffe.

"Bradford district has a deep-rooted tradition of welcoming people from across the world, many of whom are seeking refuge from war or persecution. We're proud to be a place where people have provided safety, friendship, support and hospitality. These are the qualities that underpin our status as a City of Sanctuary and that are embodied in our response to the Ukraine crisis."

Ms England said the event was important as a "huge thank you".

She added: "We wanted to recognise and celebrate those who have welcomed Ukrainian people and families and bring them together, and look at how we can continue to support our guests."
