KEIGHLEY Men's Forum heard from speaker Andrew Quarrie about his working life – including 12 years with a cruise line.
Mr Quarrie gained a college catering degree and worked as a whiskey salesman for several companies in the then West Riding of Yorkshire, with limited success.
But in the 1980s he took up the offer of a senior role in a new cruise ship venture, centring on the small islands of the Hebrides.
"For the next 12 years he was the director of this luxurious cruising line," said David Seeley, for the forum.
"During his association with the company he'd see the late Queen Elizabeth and Lady Bird Johnson, former US first lady, both enjoy cruises."
Thanks were given by forum president Dave W Smith.
