KEIGHLEY district Scouts are learning more about the dangers posed by carbon monoxide.

Northern Gas Networks has launched a new range of awareness-raising activities with the organisation, to help young people keep themselves and their families safe.

The resources, aimed at the sections from Beavers to Explorer Scouts, are designed to help members understand the signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide – or CO – poisoning, and what steps to take if they believe the gas is present in their homes.

Plus, camping recipes, embedded with CO safety information, have been produced.

Through the initiative, training and guidance is also being provided to the movement's adult volunteers so they are better equipped to teach the young people in their own groups about the dangers.

Eileen Brown, for Northern Powergrid, says: "We’re thrilled to now be in our second year of partnership with the Scouts to teach more young people about carbon monoxide.

"Our new activities also include instructions on how to maintain the audible CO alarm in your home, which is one of the simplest ways to keep your household safe. You should always make sure your CO alarm's batteries are tested regularly, and that the alarm is replaced if it comes to the end of its useable life."
