SUE Ryder – which runs Manorlands hospice at Oxenhope – is under starter's orders for a popular annual fundraiser.

The charity is gearing up for the 16th Mascot Gold Cup, being held at Wetherby racecourse.

Hailed as the world's biggest mascot race, the event – sponsored by Poundland – will take place as part of a family day on Sunday, April 30.

Entrants can wear their own mascot costume or 'adopt' one, and raise money through sponsorship either for Sue Ryder or a charity of their choice.

Race regulars returning this year include last year’s runner-up Pure Lettings Pony, Justin Beaver and Mr and Mrs Sausage, and reigning champion Danger Mouse will be defending his crown.

Since its inception, the event has raised over £335,000, half of which has gone to Sue Ryder.

Entrants last year included Keighley MP Robbie Moore.

He says: "It was brilliant to be able to take part in the Sue Ryder Mascot Gold Cup last year in support of Manorlands hospice, not least dressed as Cliff the Castle in honour of one of Keighley’s most-loved buildings!

"This year's race is again an opportunity to raise funds for an incredible charity. I encourage everyone to get involved. It's great fun but most importantly you get the chance to represent your business, club or local pub in the process and raise funds for a fantastic cause."

As well as the race itself – which involves participants negotiating six small fences – there is also a mascot parade, where punters can place bets on their favourites.

Andrew Wood, community fundraising manager at Sue Ryder, says: "The Mascot Gold Cup is always great fun for competitors and spectators alike and this year’s race is set to be bigger and better than ever.

"We still have a selection of mascots left to adopt on a first-come first-served basis so we’d love to hear from anyone who would like to give it a go.

"Proceeds raised from the event will help Sue Ryder continue to provide expert compassionate care and support to families going through the most difficult times of their lives."

Manorlands supports patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families at the hospice and in the community, across an area covering Craven, Airedale and Wharfedale as well as parts of Bradford.

It costs £10,000 a day to keep the hospice doors open.
