ORGANISERS have hailed Harden Children's Gala as a huge success.

There was a wide range of attractions at Saturday's event.

The gala was celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the parade saw this year's royal line up – Gala Queen Heidi Brent, first-ever King, Henry Lockwood, and attendants Maria Ahmed and Ollie Withers – joined by previous retinues.

Following the parade, a host of activities took place at the Memorial Hall Park gala field.

"We had a few showers but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of local children and families," said a gala spokesperson.

"It was lovely to see previous gala queens as well as this year’s king, queen and attendants in the parade.

"We had the New Orleans Jazz Band, plus lots of 'old favourites' at the field including the tea tent, bouncy castles, ice creams, rides from Diddy Dennis the fire engine, a roundabout, coconut shy, children's races and a host of stalls and other attractions, such as vintage vehicles.

"There were also new attractions, including an inflatable assault course and free magic shows by a professional magician.

"Top prize in a raffle was a hot tub generously donated by Woodbank Garden Centre."

An RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flypast planned for the afternoon had to be rescheduled.

The spokesperson added: "The intended afternoon appearance of a Spitfire and Hurricane changed to an early-evening flypast by an awesome Lancaster bomber, one of only two in airworthy condition in the world. It made three memorable low-altitude passes over the gala field and village, delighting locals!"

The weekend also saw Haworth turn back the clock.

Locals and visitors enjoyed a host of attractions at the village's 1960s Weekend.

Many donned costumes from the decade.

A spokesperson said: "The weekend started very wet, but the show went on, with people in the park listening to Natasha Harper entertain.

"The sun started to shine, and bands and loads of dancing made for a great day.

"That evening, Parkside Social Club had a ticketed 60s event – with bands and DJs – and some of the pubs had singers, themed quizzes and discos."

Entertainers on the Saturday also included Tall Faces and Corporate Tramps, and amongst those performing on Sunday were Amy Anderson Walmsley and Neon Dice.

The spokesperson added: "Massive credit goes to the committee and volunteers for putting on the event, which was enjoyed by people from all over the UK."
