THIS year's summer reading challenge for youngsters across the district has been launched.

A free bike ride, for children and their parents or carers, was held to mark the official start.

And activities, suitable for children aged four to 11, will take place at libraries across the district between Saturday, July 8, and September 16.

Youngsters participating in the Ready Set Read challenge will receive a special folder, stickers, a bookmark and frisbee, subject to availability.

And everyone who completes the initiative, and reads six books, will be awarded a certificate and medal.

The venture, delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with libraries, has this year been developed in conjunction with the Youth Sport Trust and celebrates play and participation.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s executive member for healthy people and places, says: "This year's theme of Ready Set Read aims to celebrate the power of play, sport and physical activity through reading.

"Children set a reading goal and can read anything they enjoy.

"I hope lots of youngsters keep up with their reading throughout the school holidays by taking part in the challenge."

Registration for the challenge is free, at any library.
