ONE fire crew this morning remained at the scene of the major blaze which engulfed a Keighley town-centre building, but the incident has since been declared closed.

Emergency services were called out to the North Street premises occupied by the Mango's takeaway business shortly after 9am yesterday.

At the height of the blaze, crews from Keighley, Bingley, Shipley, Stanningley, Morley, Fairweather Green, Illingworth, Bradford, Odsal, Ilkley, Rothwell, Killingbeck, Cleckheaton, Cookridge, Rawdon, Todmorden and Skipton fire stations were in attendance, plus there was aerial support from Leeds and Huddersfield.

Hose reels and water jets were used, and breathing apparatus sets worn, to bring the blaze under control.

The fire service presence was scaled back during the afternoon.

Police and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended, and a woman and child were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

That part of the town remained sealed off all day and members of the public were asked to avoid the area, but North Street is now reopened.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service says the blaze is believed to have started in the takeaway premises when flames from a cooker spread to an extractor flue, and then into floors above.

Flats in the three-storey building, which was heavily smoke-logged, were evacuated.
