POET Laureate and Bronte enthusiast Simon Armitage will be among the headline acts at a leading literature festival.

He will give a lyrical reading as part of an evening celebrating "the music of language".

The event is one of around 100 taking place during Ilkley Literature Festival, between October 6-22.

Mr Armitage has been a frequent visitor to the Bronte Parsonage Museum at Haworth over the years.

In 2017 he was the museum's creative partner and curated the main exhibition for the year, Mansions In The Sky, as activities were held marking the 200th anniversary of Branwell Bronte's birth.

Other well-known figures appearing at this year's festival – the 50th – range from children’s author Dame Jacqueline Wilson to adventurer Ray Mears.

Festival director, Erica Morris, says: "Running Ilkley Literature Festival is a little like inheriting a great estate, passed down by previous generations.

"It’s a big responsibility, and we’ve had to navigate the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis. So we’re proud to mark half a century, and carry on the vision and ambition that has always characterised this event. We hope 2023 is true to the spirit that has animated the festival since 1973."
