A KEIGHLEY community centre is amongst organisations across Yorkshire to share in a £240,000 windfall.

Leeds Building Society has awarded the cash to five causes nominated by staff.

All the projects support people from diverse backgrounds who are experiencing barriers to home ownership, or seeking help to reduce energy bills.

Keighley Association for Women and Children's Centre has received £40,000 for an initiative which supports Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslim women living in deprived neighbourhoods to reduce their household bills.

Naz Kazmi, the centre's chief executive officer, says: "Thanks to the generous funding, we hope to address the growing number of families in Keighley that are struggling with unaffordable fuel bills. As part of the project, we’ll be offering advice and support to help households become more sustainable."

Vanessa Roberts, for Leeds Building Society, says: "We know that for certain groups of people, home ownership can feel way out of reach, but through these projects we’re supporting them on the next step of this journey. This might be providing a safe place to live, or help with running and maintaining a home."

Other beneficiaries are Pride of Place Living, Leeds Asylum Seekers Network, Rush House and Leeds Action to Create Homes.
