AIREDALE NHS Foundation Trust is launching a search for new governors.

It's recruiting public governors for three areas – Bingley Rural, Craven and Keighley West & Worth Valley.

Nominations open next Thursday (February 1), and anyone aged 16 or over living in one of the areas can put themselves forward.

Following the closure of nominations at the end of February, a list of candidates will be published and polls will then take place in any contested seats.

Karen Ellison, lead governor, says the council of governors provides a key link between communities and the trust's board.

"Governors invite local people to tell them what they think about trust services and represent those views at meetings," she says.

"It's a rewarding position and can give you great satisfaction.

"Governors also hold the non-executive directors to account by asking questions about the trust’s performance, services and plans."

The council of governors comprises 20 members. Twelve are public governors, whilst four represent staff and a further four are from partner organisations such as local authorities.

A number of governor meetings are held online, but some – including the quarterly council and annual members' meetings – take place face-to-face and must be attended in person.

Reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed.

Trust chair, Andrew Gold, urges people to consider standing.

He adds: "It's an exciting time to become a governor, as we develop a new hospital on our Steeton site to provide world-class, sustainable healthcare facilities for the future.

"We'd love to hear from anyone who has an interest in healthcare, is able to attend meetings – both in person and remotely – and contribute, and who has the time to get involved.

"The trust serves a diverse population, is committed to inclusivity and encourages nominations from across the community."
