SUPPORTERS of cross-party pressure group Make Votes Matter staged an information stall in Keighley to promote proportional representation.

Organisers said they were pleased with the public response.

"Passers-by took leaflets and filled in postcards to send to their MP stating why they favour electoral reform," said a group spokesperson.

"Under the present 'first past the post' system, you cast your vote for a candidate representing a political party and the person with the most votes wins, despite the fact most of the electorate may have voted for other parties. In the 2019 general election, the Conservative Party won with a majority of 80 seats, but having polled just 43.6 per cent of votes. So a party won power with less than a majority of votes.

"Many people consider proportional representation is a fairer voting system because the share of the seats a party wins matches the share of votes received."
