A MURDER trial jury has seen CCTV footage of the moment a Keighley police officer was shot dead outside a travel agents.

Piran Ditta Khan, 75, of no fixed abode, is currently on trial at Leeds Crown Court facing a murder charge in relation to the death of the 38-year-old police constable on November 18, 2005.

He denies the offence.

PC Sharon Beshenivsky – a probationary officer who had only been in the role for nine months – was responding to a panic alarm which had been triggered at Universal Express Travel, in Morley Street, Bradford, accompanied by her colleague, PC Teresa Milburn.

The jury had been told earlier in the trial that an armed robbery was underway at the premises.

Muzzaker Imtiaz Shah, Mustaf Jama and brother Yusuf Jama were the three members of a seven-strong gang who were tasked with going inside the building, carrying a Mac 10 machine gun, 9mm self-loading pistol, large kitchen knife and cable ties inside a laptop bag, the court heard.

Robert Smith KC said the prosecution’s case is that Khan orchestrated the robbery.

The two police officers parked up opposite Universal Express Travel and went over to the premises at around 3.30pm, just half-an-hour before their shift was due to end.

Within 30 seconds, both had been shot “at almost point blank range” by one of three robbers.

The prosecution ran through the sequence of events with an officer from West Yorkshire Police who had pulled together the timeline.

As part of this process, the jury was shown a number of CCTV clips, including footage of the police car containing PC Beshenivsky – who lived at Hainworth – and PC Milburn pulling up, and the moment both officers were shot.

The three robbers can then be seen running across the road and away from the scene.

West Yorkshire Police have released the footage, alongside a picture of the police car parked opposite Universal Express, as well as a picture from outside the premises after the shooting when a police scene was in place, where two yellow evidence markers can be seen.

Khan also denies two counts of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, and two counts of possessing a prohibited weapon on the day of the alleged murder.

The two firearms charges relate to alleged possession of a Mac 10 submachine gun and a 9mm pistol.

The trial continues.
