A CHARITY which supports disadvantaged families across the region – and is backed by several Keighley-district businesses – is celebrating a milestone.

The Principle Trust has now provided respite holidays for 5,000 children since it was founded in 2011.

Breaks are offered to youngsters who are disadvantaged, disabled or have life-limiting conditions, or who've experienced poverty, trauma or abuse.

Every year, the Skipton-based charity – which was established by businessman Mike Davies – receives hundreds of referrals from social services, schools and other organisations.

Over the past 12 years, the trust has raised more than £1.6 million and bought six holiday homes – four at Marton Mere Holiday Park near Blackpool and two at White Cross, Windermere.

It has recently completed a six-figure-sum refurbishment of its lodges.

Supporters of the charity include TaxAssist Accountants in Keighley, Knight Engineers – whose head office is at Silsden – and Cross Hills-based Skipton Properties.

Mr Davies says: "Every week we receive heartwarming feedback from the families that stay in our lodges; for them it is an opportunity to escape some of their daily struggles and spend quality time together.

"To have reached 5,000 children is an achievement which has been made possible by our amazing network of fundraisers, patrons and supporters.

"We are generously supported by people and businesses across North and West Yorkshire. Our 100 per cent donations policy ensures that every penny raised from events and marketing directly benefits children and their families.

"Despite the challenging economic climate, the trust remains committed to extending its services and supporting more families across the region."

Last year, the organisation launched a new scheme, Food for Families – an ongoing initiative to help tackle food poverty.

Through the venture, a week's supply of daily essentials are provided for families staying at the holiday homes near Blackpool.

During 2024, the trust will provide up to 232 families with a week-long respite break – 136 at Marton Mere Holiday Park, and 96 at White Cross.

Mr Davies adds: "Events are integral to the success of achieving our annual fundraising target. We are always looking for ways to make sure there is a selection of events, so that all our supporters can join in – and of course, that are always fun! We regularly hold activities including quizzes, race nights, sports challenges, family fun days and our annual charity ball."
