A POPULAR annual gala won't go ahead this year, say "gutted" organisers.

Riddlesden Gala committee has made the decision after insufficient people attended a 'make or break' meeting.

Organisers had warned that without more helpers, in the run up to the event and on the day, the gala couldn't be held.

But a special meeting attracted just two people.

"It's impossible to stage the event without the help of our community," says Emma Groves-Jones, for the gala.

"It is with a heavy heart that we've had to take the decision not to go ahead this year.

"I and the committee are gutted, but we cannot pull the event together without local support.

"We will look again at the situation next year – another year, another try."

Last year's gala, the 38th, was hailed as a success.

Crowds turned out in force for the event, which began with a procession that set off from the Marquis of Granby pub and made its way through the village to the gala field, at Riddlesden St Mary's Primary School.

There was a wide range of attractions at the field, and funds raised went to Keighley Imagination Library.

Over the years, Riddlesden Gala has supported numerous good causes, including Hainworth food bank and Martin House children’s hospice.
