A BRADFORD woman has spoken about the "terrifying" moment she saw a car driving on the wrong side of the M62 moments before a fatal crash in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A man died in the two-car crash, which took place shortly after 2am yesterday between junctions 22 and 23 of the M62 near Scammonden Bridge.

The woman, who did not want to be named, was driving back to Bradford when the incident unfolded.

"It was a terrifying thing to see, headlights coming towards you at excessive speed. It scared the life out of me.

"It was driving in the fast lane the wrong way."

She added: "I can only imagine the horror the other car went through.

"I saw sirens within five minutes of the car passing so I knew something had happened.

"It made me feel lucky to wake up yesterday morning that’s for sure."

The road was closed most of the morning yesterday while police carried out investigation work.

Police issued a full statement about the fatal crash yesterday.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision on the M62 motorway today.

"At 2.06am, police received reports of a Vauxhall Corsa travelling westbound on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway.

"Officers were deployed to locate the vehicle, but it was found to have been in collision a short time later with a VW Golf close to Scammonden Bridge.

"The male Corsa driver was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"The male Golf driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for further treatment.

"Both carriageways remain closed between Junctions 22 and 24 at this time.

"Both are expected to reopen before noon today and motorists are advised to find alternative routes while these closures remain in place.

"The Major Collision Enquiry Team is investigating this collision and would like to hear from anyone who saw, or who has footage of the collision or the grey Vauxhall Corsa prior to it.

"If you can assist then please contact the team on 101, or by using the livechat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website, quoting log reference 0137 of March 23."
