A CHARITY which supports parents of children with Down syndrome has received a boost from housebuilder Barratt Homes Yorkshire West.

Down Syndrome Training & Support Service Ltd has been awarded £1,500.

The Bingley-based charity was founded in 2000 by four sets of parents who felt there was a lack of provision for youngsters with Down syndrome.

It now supports over 400 families and 200 organisations – in the Bradford district and further afield – with advice, relief and training, promotes awareness and strives to improve the health and education of children with Down syndrome.

The donation will help fund monthly family support sessions.

Dr Wendy Uttley, manager of Down Syndrome Training & Support Service Ltd, says: "The sessions allow a safe space for parents and families to make lasting friendships and reduce isolation, whilst promoting inclusion, mutual support and positive mental health awareness.

"We are passionate about ensuring our children realise their full potential in life and are so grateful for this donation from Barratt Homes Yorkshire West, which allows us to provide necessary support to young people and families.

"We are a registered charity run by and for parents and carers of children who have Down syndrome.

"We support families, and organisations across health, education and social care, and write a monthly newsletter to keep everyone up to date with our services and other relevant issues.

"We're very proud of our journey and the progress we've made over the years to improve the education, development and inclusion of children and young people who have Down syndrome."

Gavin Birch, managing director of Barratt Homes Yorkshire West, said the firm was delighted to offer support.

He added: "Down Syndrome Training & Support Service Ltd is an amazing charity that does incredible work supporting families and ensuring they receive the correct help.

"The charity in particular is close to the hearts of our subcontractor, John N Dunn Group, as one of its employees has seen first-hand the wonderful work the organisation does. After hearing its story, it was important to us to back Down Syndrome Training & Support Service Ltd so that the charity can continue to run the vital family support sessions."

Barratt Homes Yorkshire West has a number of developments across the district, including Saxon Dene at Silsden and the David Wilson Homes-branded Hewenden Ridge in Cullingworth.
