A HOMELESS man who trashed a pub has been locked up for 15 months.

Andrew Parrington pleaded guilty to burgling The Royal in Keighley Road, Crossflatts, on February 28 this year, and to theft at The Broadway branch of Sainsbury’s in Bradford city centre on March 9 when he assaulted two members of staff.

Prosecutor Lauren Smith told Bradford Crown Court that Parrington, 32, of no fixed abode, and another unidentified person smashed their way into the Royal Hotel at 6.15am. It was empty at the time.

They stole a £200 iPad plus £300 in cash and caused damage estimated at £6,720 to tills, a fruit machine and a window.

Blood left behind was forensically linked to Parrington.

Ten days later Parrington stole four boxes of baby formula from Sainsbury's. When challenged by a female member of staff he said: “Don’t come near me, I’ve got a knife and will stab you.” He then pushed over a security guard and ran off.

The shop theft was caught on CCTV, and he was arrested on March 18.

Mitigating, Saf Salam said Parrington suffered from poor mental health that was exacerbated by the use of illicit substances and living on the streets, which had led to a spate of offending.

He said he had pleaded guilty and welcomed an immediate term of custody as a way of weaning himself off substance abuse.

Recorder Gurdial Singh jailed Parrington for a total of 15 months, describing the knife threat to the female worker as “particularly unpleasant”.
