FOR many, retirement is something to look forward to.

Perhaps the chance to put your feet up after a lifetime of work, or pursue those long-held dreams.

But Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust says some people can find the sudden life change difficult to cope with.

And recent studies support that, indicating that retirement is associated with a higher risk of depression and anxiety.

The research found that a loss of social connections and sense of purpose often linked to leaving the workforce could contribute to feelings of loneliness and low self-esteem, and that many retirees also worried about their financial stability.

Now the care trust's Bradford District and Craven Talking Therapies service is spotlighting advice and support on offer to those struggling.

Naomi Holdsworth, its operations service manager, says: "At first, escaping the daily grind and commute to work, office politics or a difficult boss can seem like a great relief. However, many new retirees find that the novelty of being on 'permanent holiday' can start to wear off after a few months. The sudden change in daily structure and absence of professional identity can lead to feelings of loss, isolation and even depression."

The service provides a range of help, including online courses or group sessions covering topics such as managing low mood, anxiety and sleep problems.

People can also be signposted to social groups which will enable them to get out and about and meet others.

Naomi adds: "Retirement could be a chance to pick up a hobby or explore new interests – for example volunteering your time to a cause that’s important to you, which can be rewarding and create a sense of accomplishment, whilst expanding your social network and benefitting your community.

"Retirement can also be a good time to focus on health and wellbeing without work getting in the way, like taking up yoga or joining a gym or relaxing with a good book.

"By staying connected with friends, family and community, keeping active and looking after yourself, you can make the most of this new chapter in your life."

The Bradford and Craven Talking Therapies service is open to anyone aged over 16 registered with a GP in Bradford, Wharfedale, Airedale or Craven.
