AUDIENCES are set to be bowled over by the latest performance of Keighley actor and cricketer Sam Higgins.

He is playing the role of Pete in the Tom Wells comedy, The Kitchen Sink, being staged by Bingley Little Theatre.

Sam was most recently wowing audiences with his portrayal of the eldest brother in Keighley Musical Theatre Company’s smash hit Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Pete provides him with a different type of challenge.

"I enjoy all kinds of theatre and I couldn’t say no to this role," says Sam.

"Great comedy must be so well written, and this play provides the perfect spring evening entertainment – it’s guaranteed to make people laugh again and again.

"It is modern, physical and just plain funny! Audiences of any age will find it hard not to get swept along.

"Pete is very different to my biblical character in Joseph!

"He is a young plumber whose gran, supplier of palliative marijuana to the senior citizens of Withernsea, is his sole remaining relative.

"He's a lad who is completely unable to finish a sentence and has the downtrodden character of a beaten mongrel."

The domestic comedy about family life in the East Yorkshire coastal town became a runaway hit when it appeared at London's Bush Theatre, earning Tom Wells the Critics' Circle and George Devine awards for most promising playwright.

A spokesperson for Bingley Little Theatre says: "The Kitchen Sink features Kath, a dinner lady, who suspects her husband's days as a milkman are numbered as more and more parts of his stricken milk float turn up on her kitchen table.

"Their sullen daughter, Sophie, forfeits her black belt in jujitsu by punching the instructor, while their fey son Billy nurtures an incongruously loud-and-proud passion for Dolly Parton.

"Wells is blessed with a turn of phrase reminiscent of Alan Bennett.

"Soon the amiable, unaffected characters are shown to be bumping along on turbulent undercurrents of despair set against the comedy."

The Kitchen Sink runs at Bingley Arts Centre from Monday, May 20, until Saturday, May 25.

Performances are at 7.30pm.
