More than 300 people lined the streets for Silsden’s first Remembrance Day parade — led by war veterans — for more than 30 years.

Former soldiers, firefighters and youth group members marched from Silsden Park to the war memorial for a service where they listened to Brian Turner, who reads at St James’s Church.

Silsden town councillor and former soldier Cllr Ashley Johnson-Gill, who led and organised the parade, said: “It went absolutely brilliantly. I was so impressed with the turn out from the veterans, children and the hundreds of people who lined the streets to watch the parade.

“We will definitely be doing it again next year — but this time bigger and better, with even more veterans involved. I had really good feedback from everyone involved.”

One marcher, elderly Reg Bolton, had been involved in the D-Day landings of the Second World War.

Brownies and Scout groups at St James’s Church also marched in the parade and Silsden Youth Council helped to make the event a success by clearing the path of leaves before the parade
