A Keighley man who travelled with an aid convoy to the besieged Gaza Strip has told of some of his experiences to schoolchildren.

Abdul Ghafoor, of Shann Park, drove a van for the Viva Palestina charity, which sent dozens of vehicles loaded with supplies to Gaza last month.

The convoy reached its destination earlier this month only after enduring delays, diversions and obstruction by the police in Egypt.

Mr Ghafoor, who is the Keighley organiser for Viva Palestina, spoke to pupils at an assembly at Eastwood Primary School.

He has a granddaughter who attends the school.

He said she mentioned his humanitarian activities while she was at school, after which the deputy head invited him to address an assembly.

He said: “The children asked questions and they were interested and keen to know what things were like.”

He added that as a retired lorry driver he would be happy to contribute his skills to any future convoys to Gaza.

Eastwood Primary deputy head Steve Loryman said: “It was a very good, positive assembly.

“It was for the older children — the seven to 11-year-olds — and was part of our project to increase their understanding of the world they live in.

“Mr Ghafoor kept it low-key and child-centred.

“It was nice for the children to meet someone related to what they see happening in the news.”
