Oakworth Road has been “overwhelmingly” chosen as the site for a planned new health, social care and wellbeing centre for Keighley.

The facility should be developed where Keighley Health Centre is already based.

The decision was revealed this week following a major consultation exercise.

People were asked what they would like to see on offer in the centre and where it should be located.

NHS Bradford and Airedale had also suggested it could be built in Mitchell Street, off Bradford Road, while some members of the public put forward the vacant Keighley campus college building, in Cavendish Street.

A spokesman for NHS Bradford and Airedale said: “The Oakworth Road site has emerged as local people’s clear choice for the new centre.

“It will replace old and outdated premises in the area, including the Oaks Resource Centre, Keighley Health Centre and Holycroft Surgery.

“NHS Bradford and Airedale and Bradford Council have announced the preferred site after carefully considering all the feedback from the public.

“Over 4,000 people living in Keighley and surrounding areas responded.”

Health bosses and Bradford Council’s senior management team must now give formal approval for the Oakworth Road site.

The recommendation will also be discussed by the district council’s overview and scrutiny committee on October 14.

John Chuter, the chairman of NHS Bradford and Airedale, said: “This outcome is really good news for the people of Keighley, who were overwhelmingly in favour of the Oakworth Road site.

“A huge amount of people had their say on our plans for this exciting new development to integrate health and social care, and I’m delighted that we are now well on the way to turning this into reality.

“We looked seriously at three possible sites and the final decision was very close but the weight of public opinion swung it towards Oakworth Road.

“Each and every one of the opinions received was important to us and the decision was only made after we listened to everyone’s views.”

Councillor Amir Hussain, who is Bradford Council’s executive member for social care, said: “I’m very pleased that this decision now moves this important development forward.

“People in Keighley have made their views known loud and clear and this means that we will truly be developing a centre at people’s preferred site.”

Provision at the new centre will include a GP surgery, pharmacy, an NHS dentist, x-ray and ECG checks, clinics by specialist medical staff, a day centre for older people and services for voluntary and community groups.

Although the consultation has ended, people are still invited to get in touch if they want to be involved in the future planning for the centre.
