Cliffe Castle Museum, in Keighley, has been closed until further notice due to flooding.
The Keighley News understands water seeped in following the theft of lead from the roof.
Bradford Council yesterday refused to confirm whether lead had been stolen from the historic building.
But a spokeswoman admitted there had been “significant” flooding through the roof last Thursday.
She said: “Due to the heavy rain and continued threat of bad weather, we have had to relocate parts of the collections to safe areas in the museum until such time that adequate repairs can be undertaken.
“We are working hard to carry out the repairs and we hope to have the museum reopened to the public as soon as practically possible.”
