Night-time revellers who spend a penny in Keighley town-centre streets could be hit with an £80 fine.

Police are cracking down on people caught urinating in shop doorways and open public spaces.

The action is part of an initiative to tackle disorder and anti-social behaviour in the run-up to Christmas.

Officers will be using new high-tech cameras to help obtain evidence against troublemakers.

In a recent incident, police community support officers detained a man who they found urinating in North Street and he received a fine.

And later that same evening a man was arrested in Church Street for a public order offence. He was also fined.

Insp Wayne Horner, of Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We have seen incidents of residents relieving themselves in very public places and this sort of behaviour simply will not be tolerated.

“Offences such as this are not acceptable and are unpleasant for both people using the street and shop staff who can be left to deal with the mess the next morning. Our officers do patrol Keighley on weekend nights and anyone who is caught will face an £80 fine and possibly stronger action if they commit related offences as well.”

He added that officers were equipped with body-mounted cameras, which were tested in Keighley before being introduced across the Bradford district.

“We will be recording any incidents of anti-social behaviour that we witness for later use in prosecutions,” he said.

“While we want people to enjoy themselves, those who behave unsociably should expect to be caught and face penalties.”
