A Keighley bridegroom who suffered a potentially lethal brain haemorrhage four days before his planned wedding in Greece is out of hospital and will get married today.

John Duffey, 28, of Whitley Road, collapsed suddenly on Christmas Day. Doctors carried out life-saving surgery on him at a private hospital in Athens after friends and family raised more than £11,000 to pay for the complex treatment.

Mr Duffey, who works for Glusburn-based manufacturer Cirteq, had been due to marry Russian bride Elena Sidorova on December 29. The couple are instead going to tie the knot at a ceremony today in Volos Town Hall in Greece.

Mr Duffey’s sister Catherine Barker, of Cullingworth, said her brother could not fly home before he returns to hospital for a check-up in two weeks’ time.

She said he was recovering well from his traumatic experience. She added: “He's feeling much brighter and is really excited about getting married. My brother and my mum and dad are very grateful to everyone who donated money to help him.”

She added: “For the past couple of days he’s woken up with no headaches, which is a big improvement.”
