A table tennis club staged a 24-hour sponsored playing marathon to boost funds.

People aged from 17 to 64 took part in the event, which began at Haworth Hawks Table Tennis Club, based at Keighley Business Centre, at noon on Saturday.

More than £700 was raised for new bats, balls, nets and hall hire.

“I wouldn’t exactly describe it as fun, but it was definitely an experience,” said participant and club chairman Bob Yorke. “Plus, we raised some much-needed money.”

Others who took part included his wife Doreen, teenager Jethro Rainford – who made headlines after returning to table tennis action soon after undergoing surgery for cancer – Alan Pearson, Melvyn Dobb, Jodie Lister, club director Andy Bray, Amy Dent, Adam McKay and Colleen Drake.

They were joined for part of the time by young Oxenhope siblings Rhianna and Spencer Hurd, who played for 12-and-a-half hours each.

The players, who were allowed to sit down for 30 minutes every three hours, employed various means to relieve fatigue and boredom during the marathon, including using frying pans and paperback books as bats!

There was also a challenge to achieve the most consecutive shots in a rally, which was won by Andy Bray and Adam McKay with 1,732.
