A Keighley teacher fighting for his life in a hospital following a brutal and unprovoked attack in Thailand is set to be flown home this weekend.

Adam Pickles, 40, who remains in a coma a month after the attack, is to be taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary, where he is expected to arrive on Saturday.

His dad Andrew, who has been keeping a bedside vigil with wife Adele, announced the news on Facebook following a huge effort to get the former Bradford Grammar School pupil home.

Mr Pickles’s friend Neil Clappison said: “It was always the plan to fly him home. Primarily, we are looking out for Adam’s welfare and we want to get him the best care possible.

“His mum and dad have had to re-mortgage their home to pay £65,000 up front and we are still carrying on with fundraising.”

Mr Pickles grew up in Wimborne Drive, Blackhill, and Daleside Road, Riddlesden, until he left home for university and moved to Thailand seven years ago. The teacher, who has an eight-month-old son, was beaten over the head with a metal bar by a stranger as he made his way home.

A fundraising PickleAID gig will be held at FullCircle off Kirkstall Road, Leeds, from 2pm on Saturday, July 7.
