The Friends of Woodville are disbanding with effect from the end of this month.

Over ten years, the Friends have raised more than £20,000 which has been distributed to local disability groups.

The remaining £2,000 left in its funds will be given to the following groups: The Keighley Pool Group, The Wednesday Leisure Club, Special Olympics tenpin bowling and The Monday Leisure Club.

Woodville was, for many years, a horticultural training centre which particularly catered for people with learning disabilities.

Barry Thorne, who came up with the idea of the Friends, said: “I am sad that circumstances have changed at the former Woodville training centre. “I am very proud of what has been achieved over the past years. One of the highlights was the 2009 Special Olympics competition, where more than 60 medals were gained in a range of sports, including a large contingent from the Keighley area”

Malcolm Hoddy, chairman of the Friends, said: “It has been an honour and a privilege to chair this group. Times have changed and we need to move on. The Friends are proud of the opportunities that have been created and been given to a wide range of disabled individuals and groups.”
