Our Lady of Victories
At 3.41pm on Sunday the Olympic Torch will reach our town. A truly momentous occasion.
Who would have thought it would be carried through our streets prior to the Games.
Keighley is certainly on the map this year following Princess Anne’s opening of the civic centre in April, not forgetting Prince Charles and Prime Minister David Cameron’s written congratulations to our Keighley News on its 150th birthday.
The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, at the Queen’s 60th anniversary, spoke of St Paul’s letter to the Romans where it says everyone should use the gifts they have been given for the common good.
Jesus also warns against hiding one’s talents. The Olympic athletes are of course using their abilities and in the process giving enjoyment to millions of people all over the world.
No doubt they will have prepared for many years hoping to peak at the right time.
I suppose the hardest bit for us is discerning what gifts we have been blessed with and how to use them. Anyway, I am certain of one thing, 2012 will go down in history as a great year for our town. Enjoy the games and all the festivities taking place on Sunday.
