Firefighters were on standby today after a flood warning was issued for Glusburn Beck in Cross Hills and Sutton.

The Environment Agency issued a warning that 3.41pm this afternoon It said that heavy downpours were likely over Yorkshire and the North East, which could cause surface water flooding, with a second band of rain to pass later this evening.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service urged people at risk of flooding to think ahead.

It said people should turn off electrical items if they were at immediate risk of being flooded, and be prepared for power cuts.

But they were advise to avoid using candles and other open flames because this caused a further risk.

Valuables should be moved upstairs, and householders should prepare an emergency kit bag in case of evacuation people should keep from open water such as rivers, dykes and lakes, and parents should take a keen interest in where their children are at all times.

Motorists are advised not to drive through flood water which is fast flowing or deeper than the profile of the tyres, and pedestrians should not walk through flooded areas.

The Fire Service spokesman added: "Even shallow water moving fast can sweep you off your feet and there may be hidden dangers such as open drains, damaged road surfaces, submerged debris or deep channels; these can cause serious injuries or even death "Children should not be allowed to play in flood water, which can become contaminated with sewerage and chemicals."
