Signs warning motorists about the presence of blind people have been erected outside the sight airedale premises in Keighley.
It follows concerns raised by sight-impaired John Green about increased traffic levels past the centre in Scott Street, and the dangers for people trying to cross the road.
Keighley Town Council provided the £470 funding for the signs, which were erected by Bradford Council’s highways department.
Coun Graham Mitchell, chairman of the town council’s watch and transport committee, said: “Town councillor Judith Brooksbank first brought the lack of appropriate signage on Scott Street to the attention of the committee in 2010 and it has taken a long time to achieve this result.
“During on-site discussions with Bradford Council it became clear that while Bradford could supply the signage, it could not afford to pay for it.
“At that point members of the watch and transport committee decided that they would happily fund the signs from the committee delegated budget. As a result we now have a partnership approach which has given sight airedale the result it needed.”
Charity chief executive Kevin Baldwin thanked the town council for supporting the initiative.
