A civic visit was child's play for the Lord Mayor of Bradford when he dropped in to a children's centre.

Coun Dale Smith wanted to see how Treetops was serving pre-school children and their parents from across the Worth Valley.

Coun Smith, who used to run children's services at Bradford Council, is checking out several children's centres across the district.

Treetops – designed as a treehouse on stilts – opened last year next to Haworth Primary School, and was the last centre to be built by the council.

Manager Eileen Rayner said that over its first year the centre had exceeded the target set by the council and the Government, and parents had registered 333 of the 438 children aged up to two living in the catchment area.

Eileen said: “The centre is very successful. It's a fabulous place, very popular and well loved by the parents and children.

“The Lord Mayor met parents and children, and I talked to him about those who attend our centre and the difference we make.”

Treetops is open to families from the Bradford district, but focuses on Haworth, Oakworth Cross Roads, Oxenhope, Stanbury, Oldfield and Lees.

It provides a range of services including family support, health services including ante and post natal provision, breastfeeding support, stop-smoking sessions, early years activities and employment and training advice. There are Saturday sessions for children and fathers.

There are also holiday activities every Wednesday for children aged up to eight. Contact (01535) 618083 for more details.
