Pupils raised more than £400 in a week to support the efforts of a former member of staff who is serving as a volunteer in central Africa.

The year six children at Haworth Primary School worked together to assist Jane Czornowol, who is working in schools in Rwanda.

Key stage two leader Shirley Davids said: “Jane had appealed for help to buy books for a school which is very rural. It’s up a mountainside and across a log bridge over a river. The children there have never had a book.

“Year six decided to make it the focus of our enterprise week. The children worked in groups to devise ways to raise money.

“The most money was raised by the face painting group, which worked in our nursery and at events after school to raise almost £200.

“The whole class also worked on making flower tubs, which we sold to raise £85.

“Altogether the pupils raised £420. It was a fantastic achievement and showed their business acumen.”
