A pair of Airedale Hospital cancer specialists won funding to go on a fact-finding trip to an international conference in Austria.

Carl Booth, lead pharmacist for cancer services and clinical trials, was awarded £2,000 when his presentation was voted the best at the British Oncology Pharmacy Association symposium in Glasgow.

The presentation focused on work that was carried out by both Carl and Dr Ganesan Jeyasangar with those Airedale Hospital doctors who do not specialise in treating cancer.

The two specialists conducted a survey to find out what their colleagues knew about oral chemotherapy treatments and how they dealt with cancer patients.

They also provided some one-to-one teaching about chemotherapy medications. Their research aimed to help improve the treatment of patients who are admitted to wards at Airedale.

They will now be able to take part in the four-day European Society of Medical Oncology conference, which starts in Vienna this Saturday.

They hope to learn more about research and new developments in cancer therapy at the event, which will feature information about every type of cancer, the latest news from drug trials and workshops about different cancer medications.

Carl said: “I was delighted to win the money to pay for this conference.

“It will be a great opportunity for networking and making sure that we have the latest knowledge about cancer treatments which will help us provide the best care for our patients.”
